CAN BARRISTERS sue themselves for not reading important small print? There are 120 ‘prominent’ barristers currently who should be taking themselves to court for not reading the ‘Justice is Blind’ memo before signing themselves up to be agents of justice. For these 120 barristers are letting it be known that they will not be defending fossil fuel companies and are also not happy to support the prosecution of climate change activists.
There are over 17,000 barristers in England and Wales, so it must frustrate these barristers that fossil fuel fiends will likely find some moral vacuum to defend their earth-killing ways. Barristers can choose who they represent but they really want us to know that they wouldn’t anyway. They want it known that they don’t like baddies and they really like goodies. First thoughts? These people are messed up and reek of approval seeking. Maybe not what would come to mind instantly when looking to secure the services of a competent barrister.
But second thoughts? These barristers are earnest and doing what they think is right and don’t want to go against their conscience. Like a pro-life Christian barrister being asked to fight for abortion rights, or an Islamic fundamentalist asked to defend a gay couple’s right to marry. These barristers are conscientiously objecting. The UK is losing faith in greater numbers, and traditional religions are increasingly viewed with suspicion. But a new church, The Church of Mother Earth, is doing great business and its converts are in every corner and in plain sight.
G K Chesterton was right when he said that when people stop believing in God that they don’t believe in nothing. They believe in anything. The Church of Mother Earth is not like a religion. It is one. And like many religions at the early stages, it’s a touch intolerant.
The Church of Mother Earth are spreading the word: the world is going to end if we don’t change our ways. A clear moral belief in the existence of bad (fossil fuels, carbon footprint) – and good (recycling, nature, cyclists). A whole new language and symbology of greenery and leaves. It’s now spread throughout every part of our society, government, media, law, education, business, health and policing.
People who would view traditional believers as backward are the most enthusiastic converts, who have no problem embracing piety and preaching at wicked non-believers and their stupid, selfish, short term thinking. We now have our new child prophets and a holy ice land. Who will be the saints in their new testament I wonder? Evens on St Harry and St Greta.
We need to believe in something bigger and it’s reassuring that no matter how sophisticated or rich, or well-educated or influential we get, we are still all about a bigger cause, and even 120 barristers, like the 12 fisherman, still want to be pure of heart.
Third thoughts? God help us all.
