AS THE SUN SHINES in June and the fruit swells in the field we should look forward to a welcoming summer. Scotland on a clear blue day is the most beautiful place on Earth but for some the best reality can offer will never be enough. For some only the fantasies of faraway kingdoms will do. For all the glory of Scotland in summer it is not nor ever will be the Land of Oz.
It is increasingly clear despite the threats made by opportunists on both sides that #indyref2 is not coming. I going to make a prediction here: Covid-19 has killed off any economic case for independence, even the notion any slight fall in the economy could be somehow a soft landing.
Without the immediate prospect of victory the waters have stopped flowing and still water stagnates. Over at House of Murrell the show goes on. If Nicola never does become President of Scotland she should consider taking up diving as a hobby for like the late Jacques Cousteau there appears no depth to which she is not prepared to sink. Even the Titanic stopped at the seabed.
Fresh from having bastardised the judicial system and having overseen the deliberate undermining of legitimate British law in Glasgow, championing a mob that undoubtedly has worsened Covid-19 in Scotland, she now appears to be First Minister, SNP Party Leader and now Party Treasurer, with her husband being the party nominating officer and secretary.
Her new role as treasurer is an automatic one, given the last one has quit and others in the party have quit because in short they cannot sign off the party’s accounts. That’s extraordinary. Some will have feared doing bird for months or years because party rules on finances are clear and misbehaviour can be criminal.
It isn’t normal is it? There isn’t any way this is remotely normal. This is no minor party. It boasts tens of thousands of members and income running into millions of pounds (much of which funded through Short money whose role is ripe for review ). Its stated aim is to take Scotland independent whether we swallow independence or choke on it. How serious now is such a frightening notion?
How are people supposed to trust their financial future to this parcel of rogues? In any other walk of life but politics if the SNP were giving out financial advice they’d be struck off the register and likely jailed for their behaviour in selling Scotland by the pound. Secret accounts books, husband and wife management, opponents dragged through court on the taxpayers’ shilling, huge estates handed over to shady businessmen, ferries never finished, national energy companies never started.
It is the business plan of a Quixotic 1980s mafia don. How exactly is the Scottish National Party NOT an organised crime syndicate? Donald Trump came to power on the back of calling his opponent Crooked Hilary. One can only wonder why she did not sue…
This is not normal for Scotland or anywhere in the United Kingdom. It is very, very ugly and for those who dream of Oz, on that independent Scotland how do they get there? Well, to quote some old Dublin humour on asking directions,
“Wherever you are going, I wouldn’t start from here”
No truer words were said in jest. I wouldn’t buy a used car or a timeshare from the Murrells, and a new country is for life. Is this how it is to start? Grubby, petty fibs and cooked books and state sponsored vendettas? Do nationalists think so little of themselves and their countrymen that they think this is anywhere near good enough or that somehow in Oz that fruit starts rotten and then ripens sweet? What is rotten is rotten, and it rots whatever else is ripe and sweet. The Murrells appear rank rotten apples that are spoiling the whole cart.
Events become patterns, then trends, then truth. It is incredible that SNP members are speaking out given their future nominations are surely doomed for daring to break cover. The Murrells are an economic unit as they are married. The treasurer has a fiduciary role and her husband and party employee is the nominating officer who can break anyone who exercises a duty of diligence and candour to speak out.
That situation alone is undoubtedly rotten. Separation of powers in Scotland is weak but in the governing party it is surely non-existent? We are approaching the need for Westminster to do something unique. We need an independent public enquiry into the SNP or at least the Serious Fraud Office needs to pay a visit. I hope the Murrells have nice biscuits. Such a party in power in Westminster would be unthinkable and would be terrifying but it seems perfectly fine for over 60 MSPs and 50 MPs. So long as they retain the whip they are endorsing their party’s behaviour.
Though an independence Scotland is as far away as ever, we are no longer in Kansas. The rules of a normal functioning democracy are no longer applying in Scotland. We are going to need brains, heart and a lot of courage to get back home because wherever we are, we cannot stay for long.
